Five Fabulous Celebrity Engagement Rings

Square cut or pear-shaped, diamonds really are a girl's best friend. Especially when it comes with an elaborate ceremony and everlasting love. This weekend Anne Hathaway found a new BF when Adam Shulman, her boyfriend of three years, proposed.
As if the proposal wasn't enough, Shulman designed the ring with some help from Kwiat Heritage Jewels. Although no official statement has been made regaring Hathaway's new bling, it seems to be a simple cushion cut with a cluster of diamonds. Beautiful and basic. But how does her ring stack up to some of the other bling of 2011?
Kate Middleton
This British beauty earned more than a royal title when Prince William proposed. Middleton also inherited Princess Diana's 18 carat sapphire. Although a non-tradiational engagement gem, 14 diamonds circled the blue stone. As an added bonus, she had something blue on her wedding day.
Jessica Simpson
This mom-to-be had to hold off on her wedding, but she can still flaunt her engagement bling. When Eric Jonhson proposed to Simpson, he did so with a ruby flanked by two four-carat diamonds. Now she can give birth in high end jewelry and high-heeled shoes. Stunning or stupid?
Kim Kardashian
You can't discuss 2011 weddings without brining up the Miss Kardashian. He may have been an a-shole but Kris Humphries had good taste, selecting a 20.5-carat Lorrain diamond engagement ring, worth almost $2 million. Clearly a good investment.
Kim Zolciak
I have yet to find something of this Real Housewives fo Atlanta star's wedding that I don't love. In addition to three stunning outfits, Zolciak rocked a 10-carat square cut on her wedding day to Kroy Biermann. Can't wait to get a closer look when her wedding special premiers.
Bella Swan
She may be fiction, but the female protagonist of the Twilight series rocked bling that most of us will never attain. Author Stephanie Meyer collaborated with InfinityJewelery Company to create this gorgeous oval-cut multi diamond ring. Maybe I should try to score a vampire.

The Bikini Wallpaper

When we think of summer we think of bikini season - getting the perfect bikini body, finding the perfect swimsuit, and of course, going to the perfect beach. Although some variations of bathing suits and swimwear have been around for hundreds of years, the bikini has its own story.

The BikiniThe first bikini-esque attire dates all the way back to 5000 BC, but is more notably depicted on Ancient Greek urns showing athletic women dressed in two-pieces. Artwork in Sicily depicts women in bikinis as far back at 285AD! At the Villa Ramona del Casale, the mosaic artwork features images of ten women, dubbed the "Bikini Girls," exercising in clothing that would pass as bikinis today. In fact, there were even images found from the ancient city of Pompeii that depicted women wearing bikinis!

The BikiniBetween the 6th century AD and the late 1800s portrayals of bikinis become scarce. In 1830 the first "decency" swimsuit appeared. Prior to then swimsuits were considered immoral due to religious and Puritanical beliefs about showing skin and the human body. The decency swimsuit covered the entire body - from ankles to wrists - and had stripes like a prison uniform. Over the next hundred years as people become more comfortable about showing skin and laws become more lax, bathing suits became skimpier and revealed more of the body.

The BikiniBy 1913, women were allowed to show some leg and arm thanks to Carl Jantzen's design. He made the first functional two-piece swimwear, a close fitting one-piece with shorts on the bottom and short sleeves on top. By the 1930s, sleeves of bathing suits were removed and necklines started to get lower.

The BikiniIn the 1940's the United States and most of the world was at war causing the government to order a 10% cut in fabric used for women's swimsuits. More and more two-piece suits were being made now and started to be seen more on the beaches. Popular actresses at the time like Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth, and Lana Turner boosted popularity by wearing two pieces.

The Bikini1946 saw the creation of the modern bikini in France by both Louis Réard, an engineer, and designer Jacques Heim. It was met with both acceptance and disapproval. The swimsuit was banned in Spain, Portugal, and Italy. Here in the United States, women could be issued citations for wearing bikinis, which were considered scandalous and lewd.

The BikiniThe taboo status of the bikini began to change in the 60s thanks to actresses like Ursula Andress who donned the now famous white bikini in the James Bond film Dr. No. Between more mainstream depictions, in films and TV, and the burgeoning hippie movement, the bikini slowly became more acceptable.

The BikiniIn the 80's and 90's the bikini continued to push the envelope of both fashion and what was considered appropriate. Thong and g-string bikinis made regular appearances on the cover of Sports Illustrated and images of tanned bodies on the beaches of South America showed off a much more revealing style than Americans were used to. Slowly these different styles have made their way into U.S beachwear along with other swimsuit innovations such as the monokini, tankini, bandeau top, and many more.

The BikiniToday's bikinis are a far cry from the cumbersome two pieces of the 40's and 50's and bathing suit designers continue to find new, creative ways to design stylish, flattering pieces that every women will want to wear!

Watch the Hajj in Saudi Arabia—the world’s largest pilgrimage—live on YouTube

Nearly 2.5 million Muslims will officially begin the annual Islamic ritual of the Hajj on November 5, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The Hajj represents one of the five pillars of Islam; it requires all Muslims around the world who are able-bodied and can afford it to perform the pilgrimage once in their lifetime.

The Hajj is an ancient ritual, but now, through the Saudi Ministry of Culture and Information's YouTube channel, millions of people from around the world will be able to experience and comment on the event by tuning in via video.

Earlier this year, we worked with the Saudi Ministry of Culture and Information to broadcast Islamic prayers live during Ramadan from the Holy Mosque in Mecca for the first time. In continued cooperation with the Ministry, we’re now able to live stream the Hajj on YouTube for the first time.

The stream will be live on Saturday, November 5 at http://www.youtube.com/hajjlive.

Powering a new job search engine for military veterans

Earlier today, President Obama spoke about the importance of helping returning military veterans find work. Thousands of businesses have committed to hiring military veterans and families and as part of this nationwide effort, starting today, job seekers can visit the National Resource Directory (NRD) to search more than 500,000 job openings from employers around the country.

We have been working with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to provide a customized job search engine for the NRD, using Google Custom Search technology. This custom search engine uses the power and scale of Google search to constantly crawl the web, looking for JobPosting markup from Schema.org on sites like simplyhired.com to identify veteran-committed job openings. An employer can easily add a job posting to NRD simply by adding that markup to their own web page. As pages are updated or removed from the web, they’re automatically updated and removed from the system, keeping the available job postings on NRD fresh and up to date.

If you’re an employer, you can find more information on how to participate on nationalresourcedirectory.gov. In addition, organizations such as local veterans' groups can help people find jobs by adding a veteran-committed jobs search box to their websites.
